(TMJ) DYSFUNCTION

Chiropractors are trained to correct problems due to poor joint mechanics and joint misalignments. Chiropractic treatment of the TMJ focuses on joint mobilizations, adjustments and soft tissue techniques applied directly to the TMJ and its surrounding musculature. In most cases,

TMJ dysfunction is influenced or exacerbated by poor joint mechanics, and tight musculature in the upper back and neck. Therefore, of equal importance, Chiropractic care also focuses on corrections to the mechanics and positioning of the joints in the upper back and neck to relieve symptoms associated with TMJ disorders.

When these treatments are employed, motion of your upper back, neck and jaw joints can improve and your symptoms such as: ear pain, jaw locking, headaches, and neck pain can be reduced or eliminated.

PELVIC FLOOR PHYSIOTHERAPY

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is an emerging form of therapy addressing & treating conditions of pelvic floor dysfunction for women at any age or stage of life.

WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICES: Urinary Incontinence, Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Pelvic Pain, Prenatal Care, Diastasis Recti and Postpartum Recovery For Vaginal Births & C-sections.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Pelvic Floor Dysfunction can be diagnosed by a registered physiotherapist with additional specialized training, Hiral Desai BPT. An internal exam will be performed to determine the function of the pelvic floor muscles, as well as an external orthopaedic assessment to evaluate the bones and muscles of the low back, hips and Sacro-iliac joints. (60 mins) Follow up sessions (30-45 mins) may include a combination of education, pelvic floor muscle re-education, exercises, manual therapies or electrical muscle stimulation.

*WEAK PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES (HYPOTONICITY): Contribute to Stress Incontinence, Urge Incontinence as well as Pelvic Organ Prolapse

*TIGHT PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES (HYPERTONICITY): Urinary and Fecal Urgency, Urge Incontinence, Chronic Pelvic Pain, Dyspareunia, Vaginismus, Vulvodynia, Pudendal Neuralgia, Interstitial Cystitis and Painful Urination

PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES HAVE 5 MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

 1. Maintaining continence of the bowel and bladder

2. Allowing sexual function and pleasure

3. Providing support to the internal organs; keeping the uterus, bladder and intestines within the abdominal cavity where they belong

4. Providing support to the low back

5. Helping the circulatory system to get the blood and other body fluids from the legs back to the heart

PEE WHEN YOU SNEEZE? RUN? JUMP? OTHER?

*3.3 million Canadians suffer from incontinence

*1 in 4 women are incontinent

*1 in 3 women over the age of 40 have urinary incontinence

*Having bladder leakage following childbirth is NOT normal

*1/6 of children under the age of 17 struggle with incontinence

*only 1 out of 12 indivduals seek out treatment due to embarrassment, or do not know that help is available

“URINARY INCONTINENCE” WHY WOMEN?

*Giving Birth- Pushing a baby through the birth canal places stretching pressures on most of the pelvic organs and muscles.

*Declining levels of hormones during and after menopause

*Other factors can also cause problems for the pelvic floor- longterm coughing, sneezing, constipation or increased body mass.

DIASTASIS RECTI

Is the separation in the rectus abdominis or "6 pack" muscle, most often occurring during pregnancy. If you can lift your head while lying on your back and the centre of your stomach protrudes out, you may have what is called rectus diastasis. It is measured by the number of fingers you can fit between the muscle when lying on your back and lifting your head.

Why is it a problem? Your abdominals work with your pelvic floor, therefore a separation of the rectus abdominis/core muscles can make the pelvic floor less efficient and may also contribute to incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Corrective exercises are recommended.

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Extracorporeal Shockwave technology uses high-energy acoustic pulse or sound waves to eliminate pain, restore mobility and enhance blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue.

Shockwave Therapy or (ESWT) is often used in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions involving connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons, as well as bone, heel and joint pain.

ACUPUNCTURE

Electro Acupuncture is the method of attaching acupuncture needles to a device that generates a mild but continuous electrical pulse.

Electro Acupuncture is extremely effective as it stimulates a larger region surrounding acupuncture points, increases blood circulation, relaxing spastic muscles, and releasing painful trigger points.

Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is the evidence based application of the traditional theories of  acupuncture combined with the current concepts of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology & pathophysiology. Combining ancient Chinese principles with modern science in order to relieve acute pain, alter movement, and improve function.

It involves the insertion of very fine sterile disposable needles in specific points on the body to access different physiological responses. Acupuncture points are carefully determined based on your specific injury and symptoms targeting the muscles and nerves that are causing the pain or dysfunction.

The Scientifically Proven Benefits Of Acupuncture Include: Pain Relief, Inflammation Reduction, Improved Blood Flow and Arterial Function, Stress Reduction, Improved Nerve Conduction and Improved Systemic Organ Function.
